 Pool liners do 2 things.  

They hold water and they look nice.  Here's when you should think about a swimming pool liner replacement:

• If your pool is leaking or you have multiple patches from wear and tear
• If you are seeing severe fading typically in the corner that gets the brunt of the afternoon sun.  UV Exposure is what will cause a catastrophic failure.
• If it is starting to pull away from the coping/liner track it is a sign that the vinyl has lost its pliability and will no longer stay stretched. 
• If you notice any signs of cracking  or unusual stretching above the water line, in the corners especially.  

Of course you can ... but it isn't recommended. 

You wouldn't wait for your roof to start leaking water into your house, you should address the issue before it becomes a problem.   Damage like the picture above is not patchable and can't be fixed in one day.

Manufacturers say 10 years, but it isn't uncommon to see 15 year old liners.  Once they hit that age, every extra year is a blessing, be sure to put a swimming pool liner replacement in the budget.
